Panel upgrades

When the panel is the bottleneck.

A panel is sized for the house the day it is put in. A car charger, a generator, an addition, a workshop or a hot tub can each ask for more than an older panel has room to give.

The signs are familiar: breakers that trip, lights that flicker, no open spaces for a new circuit. We look at the panel and the service, tell you what they can carry, and upgrade the service, replace the panel or add a sub-panel where the new load lives.

The two panels at the top of this page went in side by side in a garage wall, with the drywall opened above and below them for the new cable.

Where a panel upgrade fits

  • Before a car charger

A Level 2 charger needs its own circuit, so the panel check comes first.

  • Before a generator

A generator connects through a transfer switch at the panel.

  • Before an addition or a shop

New rooms and new tools mean new circuits, and a sub-panel puts the breakers where the work is.

How do I know if I need a panel upgrade?

Breakers that trip often, lights that flicker, no room for new circuits, or a plan to add a car charger, a generator or an addition are the usual reasons to have the panel looked at.

Can you add a sub-panel to a garage or workshop?

Yes. Sub-panels for garages and shops are part of the work we do.

Do you pull the permit?

Yes. Panel and service work is permitted and inspected.
